Managing Skin Conditions in Cats & Dogs

At VMCLI, our goal is to provide the highest quality of care for our patients to allow them to live comfortably and experience the best quality of life possible.

Our dermatology department does this with the diagnosis and treatment of skin conditions affecting our furry friends.

There are a variety of chronic and inflammatory skin conditions that can affect dogs and cats, but some are more common than others. These include allergies, bacterial infections, fungal infections, chronic scratching, skin parasites and hair loss.

Since long-term monitoring of these diseases is often necessary, excellent communication between the dermatology team and our clients is extremely important. We will collaborate with you to help diagnose dermatologic disease and implement a treatment protocol tailored to your pet's unique needs.

Experienced Veterinary Dermatologist

Dr. Meghan Umstead, our veterinary dermatologist, has completed extensive dermatology training after veterinary school including an internship and specialized residency to become board-certified in Veterinary Dermatology.

What to Expect During a Veterinary Dermatology Appointment

Our dermatology specialist will work with you to determine the cause of your pet's discomfort and will recommend treatment based on their needs.

Examination & Diagnosis

Prior to performing an examination, our veterinary dermatologist will speak with you about your pet's medical history to aid in the diagnosis of their condition. They will then use the diagnostic tools at our in-house laboratory to determine the cause of your pet’s skin condition.

Treatment Planning

Once your companion's condition has been identified, the veterinary dermatologist will offer recommendations for treatment. These options may include prescription medication, shampoo/conditioner, an ear flush, allergy vaccines, or simple changes to your pet’s environment.
