Surgical Care for Cats & Dogs on Long Island
Our surgical center at Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island is a cutting-edge facility staffed by leaders in the field of veterinary surgery.
We offer comprehensive surgeries ranging from elective surgery for sports medicine patients to total hip replacement and open-heart surgery and more.
Our specialists focus on treating your pet using the least invasive method possible. If surgery is deemed necessary, our vets will ensure that you are fully informed of the procedure and expected outcome.
All veterinary surgeries are performed using the most advanced technology available, with fully-trained support staff available to our surgical patients at all times.
Based on your pet’s problems, our surgical specialists will perform a detailed examination and discuss recommended diagnostic tests, procedures, risks and expected outcomes with you.
Experienced Veterinary Surgeons
Veterinary surgeons are highly trained, having undergone four years of additional training after veterinary school to become certified specialists. This training consists of an internship followed by a rigorous three-year residency program.
What to Expect with Veterinary Surgery at VMCLI
Our surgical center is equipped with cutting-edge surgical instrumentation and equipment. Everything we do, every decision we make, is designed to ensure post-operative success for your pet.
-
Anesthesia & Pain Management
Our specialists will create an anesthetic plan that is tailored to your pet's specific condition. Overall cardiovascular health and lab work are taken into consideration with each pet.
We take extra care to ensure your pet is pain-free during and after surgery often by using a multimodal approach (i.e. local anesthetic, epidural anesthesia and systemic medications).
-
Continuous Patient Monitoring
We use state-of-the-art monitoring equipment, such as EKG and oscillometric blood pressure, to monitor your pet’s vitals during surgery.
-
Sterilization Techniques
A strict sterile technique is used for all surgical procedures at Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island. This means our operative suite has positive pressure airflow and the room is cleaned after every procedure.
Our surgeons also use sterile prep and full surgical attire (sterile gloves, surgical cap, surgical gown).
-
Surgical Lasers
In laser surgery, a highly focused laser beam can efficiently vaporize living tissue with extreme precision while sealing capillaries, small blood vessels, lymphatics, and nerve endings.
Our veterinary surgeons offer procedures using surgical lasers which offer a number of benefits including:
- Reduced Pain
- Less Bleeding
- Decreased Swelling
- Faster Recovery
-
Post-Operative Care
Once the surgery is complete, your veterinary surgeon will share any relevant details from the procedure with you and the next steps.
Some pets are able to return home the next day while others are required to stay longer. It ultimately depends on the complexity of the procedure and your pet’s health status.
When you arrive to pick up your pet, we will provide you with discharge instructions and answer any questions you have about caring for your pet after surgery.
