Veterinary Emergency Services Overview
The emergency and critical care department of the Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island is directly available to clients, or via veterinary referral, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year. A dedicated and experienced team of emergency and critical care veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and support staff is always available. In addition, our extensive team of board-certified specialists supplements this service 24 hours a day.

At the Veterinary Medical Center we strive to treat patients with the utmost care, while addressing the particular needs of their owners. In emergencies, our goal is to assist pet owners in making the best decisions for their animals. All diagnostic and treatment options are clearly and concisely discussed with each client. Prior to any treatment, an estimate of potential fees is provided. We also stay in contact with the family veterinarian, who manages the long-term relationship with these pets and their owners. At the Veterinary Medical Center our staff, family veterinarians, and pet owners are all equal parts of a veterinary team.

Our emergency department includes a centralized 24-hour intensive care unit (ICU) continuously monitored by emergency veterinarians and Licensed technicians. The ICU routinely performs electrocardiography, manometry (blood pressure), and pulse oximetry (blood oxygen saturation). Diagnostic information is quickly available with our in-house laboratory, computed tomography (CT), and radiology equipment. Our ICU is also equipped with neonatal incubators and a highly visible Isolation area. We can also treat a wide variety of exotic pets including birds, reptiles, ferrets, rabbits, and rodents.

All patients treated by the Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island’s emergency service are normally transferred back to their family veterinarian by the next business day. Exceptions include unstable patients, or those referred to specialty services.

It’s important that our emergency medical team clearly understands your wishes before any course of treatment is undertaken.

Full payment for your visit is due when your pet is discharged. Cash, debit cards, Visa®, MasterCard®, America Express®, Discover®, and CareCredit® are all acceptable methods of payment. Personal checks are not accepted.
